Trinidad is the closest "big" town to Raton, NM, 13 miles over the Raton Pass. The Raton Pass was originally part of the Santa Fe Trail, and I imagine it was very difficult driving cattle up and over. We took a car tour of Trinidad after we shopped at the Safeway, and we found a house with an interesting retaining wall!
Trinidad is fixing up their downtown area, and they are doing a very good job. They're not quite done, but pretty soon this will be a very cute tourist stop on I-25. Did you know that THE pre-eminent hospital for gender reassignment (sex changes) is in Trinidad? This is something that the Chamber of Commerce does NOT brag about in their brochures, but hey, someone has to do it, and Trinidad is a beautiful place to be is you're going through this difficult process.
